PRESIDENTE DA COMISSÃO DE ÉTICA PARA INVESTIGAÇÃO CLÍNICA (CEIC)
Licenciou‐se em Física Teórica na Universidade de Witwatersrand (Joanesburgo) tendo completado o seu Doutoramento na mesma área, em 1972.
Trabalhou depois durante cerca de 20 anos na Universidade de Berkeley na Califórnia, onde foi Professor de Fisiologia Celular e de Biofísica, tendo ainda desempenhado funções no Laboratório Nacional Lawrence Berkeley, primeiro como Diretor Assistente no Departamento de Energia e Ambiente e, posteriormente, como Diretor do Centro de Estudos Ambientais. De seguida, mudou‐se para a Universidade do Porto para lecionar Biofísica no Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas tendo sido simultaneamente, e até recentemente, Diretor do Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular (IBMC) e Diretor do Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (INEB). Alexandre Quintanilha presidiu depois à Comissão responsável pela implementação do consórcio i3S que juntou os principais institutos de investigação biomédica do Porto.
É membro da Academia Europeia e da World Academy of Arts and Science fazendo também parte do Conselho para Investigação e Exploração da National Geographic Society. Ao longo dos anos presidiu inúmeros grupos de trabalho na European Science Foundation (ESF), na Comissão Europeia, na Organização para a Cooperação e Desenvolvimento Económico (OCDE), e em diversas organizações nacionais e internacionais dedicadas à investigação.
Atualmente, é o presidente da Comissão de Ética para a Investigação Clínica (CEIC), e Secretário do Conselho dos Laboratórios Associados. Foi membro do Conselho Consultivo para a Ciência e Tecnologia, durante o mandato do anterior Presidente da Comissão Europeia, José Manuel Durão Barroso. Publicou mais de 130 artigos em revistas científicas de nível mundial e seis livros, e esteve sempre ligado ao desenvolvimento de políticas para a ciência. As suas áreas de trabalho são o stress biológico, a perceção do risco e a promoção pública da ciência.

He graduated in Theoretical Physics at the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg) and completed his PhD in the same area in 1972.
He then worked for approximately 20 years at the University of Berkeley, California, where he was Professor of Cell Physiology and Biophysics, and served in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, first as Assistant Director in the Department of Energy and Environment, and later as Director of the Center for Environmental Studies. He then moved to the University of Porto to teach Biophysics at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. He was, until recently, Director of the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC) and Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB). Alexandre Quintanilha later presided over the Commission responsible for the implementation of the i3S consortium that brought together the main institutes of biomedical research in Oporto.
He is a member of the European Academy and the World Academy of Arts and Science and is also a member of the National Geographic Society's Research and Exploration Council. Over the years he has chaired numerous working groups at the European Science Foundation (ESF), the European Commission, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and a number of national and international research organizations.
He is currently the Chairman of the Ethics Committee for Clinical Research (CEIC) and Secretary of the Council of Associated Laboratories. He was a member of the Consultative Council for Science and Technology, during the mandate of the previous President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso. He has published more than 130 articles in world scientific journals and six books, and has always been involved in the development of science policies. Their areas of work are biological stress, risk perception and the public promotion of science.
